Material Selection
First, material selection is critical. Tanks intended for corrosive fuels (such as diesel with high sulfur content, biodiesel blends, or industrial solvents) often use corrosion-resistant metals like aluminum or stainless steel (e.g., 316-grade, which withstands harsh chemicals better than 304). For plastic tanks, high-density polyethylene (HDPE) or cross-linked polyethylene (XLPE) is preferred, as these polymers resist swelling and chemical breakdown from corrosive agents.
Internal Coatings
Second, internal coatings add a protective barrier. Epoxy or phenolic coatings are commonly applied to metal tanks, forming a seamless layer that prevents fuel from directly contacting the metal surface. These coatings adhere tightly to the tank's interior, even under temperature fluctuations, and resist peeling or cracking that could expose the metal to corrosion.
Sealed Components
Third, sealed components minimize vulnerability. Gaskets and O-rings are made from chemical-resistant materials like Viton or EPDM, which maintain flexibility and integrity when in contact with corrosive fuels. Valves and fittings are also constructed from corrosion-resistant metals or reinforced plastics to avoid degradation at connection points, a common area for leaks.

Regular maintenance and compliance ensure long-term performance:
