The fuel pump is a critical component that delivers petrol from the tank to the engine, ensuring a steady flow of fuel for combustion. Its operation involves a coordinated sequence of mechanical and electrical processes to maintain optimal pressure and volume.

When the ignition is turned on (even before starting the engine), the pump receives power from the vehicle's electrical system, activating the motor.

The motor drives an impeller—a rotating component with vanes that creates suction. As the impeller spins, it draws petrol from the tank through an inlet screen, which filters out debris to protect the pump and engine. The spinning impeller pushes the fuel through a series of channels, increasing pressure as it moves toward the outlet.

Operation Sequence:

  1. Ignition activates pump motor

A check valve at the pump's outlet prevents fuel from flowing back into the tank when the pump is off, maintaining residual pressure in the fuel line for easier starting. The pressure regulator, often integrated into the pump assembly, controls the fuel pressure by returning excess fuel to the tank, ensuring consistent pressure regardless of engine demand.

The pressurized fuel then travels through fuel lines to the engine's fuel injectors or carburetor, where it is atomized and mixed with air for combustion. Some pumps also include a level sensor that sends fuel quantity data to the vehicle's dashboard gauge.

This continuous, pressure-controlled operation ensures the engine receives the right amount of fuel at all speeds and loads, making the fuel pump essential for reliable engine performance and efficiency.
