Valve Jamming Resolution Protocol
Systematic approach to safely resolve valve jamming in oil storage tanks
Safety Precautions
- Isolate the tank by shutting off upstream/downstream valves
- Relieve pressure through vent systems
- Ensure proper ventilation to avoid vapor accumulation
- Wear appropriate PPE (gloves, goggles, anti-static clothing)
Jamming Cause Identification
- Check for debris buildup (sludge, sediment)
- Inspect for corrosion on valve components
- Examine for seized moving parts from inactivity
- Remove valve cover to inspect internal components if accessible
Debris Removal Techniques
- Gently tap valve body with rubber mallet to dislodge particles
- Use oil-compatible lubricant on stem and seal areas
- Work valve handle slowly back and forth to distribute lubricant
- Never apply excessive force to avoid seal damage
Corrosion Treatment
- Clean rusted parts with wire brush or abrasive pad
- Apply anti-corrosion lubricant after cleaning
- For severe jamming, use valve wrenches/cheater bars (if rated)
- Consider replacement if corrosion is extensive
Post-Resolution Verification
- Test valve operation repeatedly for smooth movement
- Flush valve with clean oil to remove remaining debris
- Reinspect seals for potential leak damage
- Document issue and solution for maintenance records
