Petrol Overflow Safety Guide
Quick, calm, and safe actions to prevent fire risks, environmental harm, and potential injuries
1Stop the Refueling Process
If using a self-service pump, release the nozzle trigger and return it to the pump holder to cut off the fuel flow. If an attendant is assisting, alert them immediately to stop the pump.
2Eliminate Ignition Sources
Do not start or turn off any vehicle engines nearby, as this can create sparks. Avoid using mobile phones, lighters, or any electronic devices that might generate a spark.
3Contain and Clean Up the Spill
Use the absorbent materials provided at most fuel stations—such as special pads or sand—to cover the spilled fuel. These materials help soak up the petrol and prevent it from spreading.
4Check for Petrol Contact
If petrol gets on clothing, remove the contaminated items immediately and wash them separately with detergent—do not dry them in a clothes dryer, as residual petrol vapor could ignite.
If petrol comes into contact with skin, wash the area thoroughly with soap and water. If petrol gets into eyes, flush them with clean water for several minutes and seek medical attention if irritation persists.
5Final Inspection
Check the vehicle's fuel cap and filler neck to ensure there are no damages that caused the overflow. Make sure all spilled petrol has been absorbed and the area is dry before starting the vehicle.
